There are a lot of blogs about creating the perfect garden or farm. There are not as many blogs chronicling the mishaps of the casual gardener as they learn the first steps of growing their own plants, but that’s what Walnut & Maize is here to show you. I’ll make the mistakes and we’ll learn from them together.

We have 12,000 square feet (100 x 120ft, or a little over a quarter acre) of beautiful Nebraska land to play with. Bought in 2018, this flat land with clay and loam soil is the perfect place to experiment with gardening. The plan is to work with as many native species of plants as possible, as well as working in some fun ones like large blooming hardy hibiscus.
Of course, it’s no fun if there aren’t challenges. This land is nestled in the city, but has no access to water or electricity, and there are no sheds or buildings on it. This makes gardening difficult in the hot Nebraska summers, some of the many problems we’ll have to learn to work around or improve.
We’ll also be experimenting and learning about some fun household plants, currently working with orchids and air plants! Some of the most interesting and unusual plants you can keep indoors.
Good luck to us, Walnut & Maize
